Signs of stress
In our modern lives we often experience many daily stresses. Stress is what happens to us when our mind thinks that we are under some sort of threat. These threats can be small, like an argument, a mountain of paperwork to complete, or being stuck on hold when you are waiting to talk to someone on the phone. Occasionally we may also experience actual threats to life such as illness and disease. Whether they are small or large our mind still responds in exactly the same way. When you feel threatened, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. This is the body’s way of preparing us to respond to the threat. You may know this as the “fight or flight” response. A small amount of stress is not actually a problem, it can motivate us. However when stress levels become high and we are producing an overload of these hormones it can be quite damaging to our physical and mental wellbeing.
Stress can affect us physically. You might find that your first clues about being stressed are physical signs, like tiredness, headaches or an upset stomach. Prolonged experience of the fight or flight stress response can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, speed up the aging process and leave you vulnerable to a host of mental and emotional problems. Common signs of stress are insomnia, dizziness, low mood, rapid heartbeat and palpitations, loss of memory, eating more or less, social isolation, avoiding tasks and loss of sex drive and frequent colds.
